Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 salmon fillets (about 6 ounces each)
  • 2 tablespoons white miso paste
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 tablespoon green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the white miso paste, softened butter, soy sauce, honey (or maple syrup), sesame oil, rice vinegar, minced garlic, and grated ginger.
  2. Use a whisk or a fork to mix everything together until you have a smooth and creamy marinade. Ensure there are no lumps of miso left; it should be well blended.
  3. Taste the marinade and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper if needed. Keep in mind that the miso and soy sauce are already salty, so you may not need much additional salt.
  4. Place the salmon fillets in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag.
  5. Pour the miso butter marinade over the salmon, ensuring that each fillet is well coated.
  6. If using a dish, cover it with plastic wrap; if using a bag, seal it tightly.
  7. Refrigerate the salmon for at least 30 minutes, but for best results, let it marinate for 1 to 2 hours. This allows the flavors to penetrate the fish deeply.
  8. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  9. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  10. Remove the salmon from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before cooking. This helps the salmon cook more evenly.
  11. Place the marinated salmon fillets on the prepared baking sheet, skin-side down.
  12. Spoon any remaining marinade over the top of the fillets for extra flavor.
  13. Bake the salmon in the preheated oven for 12 to 15 minutes, depending on the thickness of the fillets. The salmon should be opaque and flake easily with a fork when done.
  14. If you prefer a slightly caramelized top, you can broil the salmon for an additional 2-3 minutes at the end of the baking time. Just keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.
  15. Once the salmon is cooked, remove it from the oven and let it rest for a couple of minutes.
  16. While it’s resting, chop the green onions and prepare your sesame seeds for garnish.
  17. Serve the salmon on a platter or individual plates, garnishing with chopped green onions and a sprinkle of sesame seeds.
  18. If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  19. To reheat, place the salmon in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 10 minutes, or until warmed through. You can also microwave it in short intervals, but be careful not to overcook it.
  20. Choose high-quality salmon for the best flavor and texture. Wild-caught salmon is often more flavorful than farmed.
  21. If you’re short on time, you can marinate the salmon for just 15 minutes, but the longer it sits, the more flavorful it will be.
  22. Feel free to experiment with the marinade by adding other ingredients like chili paste for heat or lime juice for a citrusy twist.
  23. If you don’t have white miso, you can substitute with yellow miso.
